Smartcast

Cast attack skills from your hotkey bar without clicking the monster: move the mouse over a monster and press the skill's hotkey. The monster under your cursor becomes your mark (shown with a circle), and your attack skills go to the mark.

Smartcast is part of the Sol client (a small add-on file, smartcast.dll, next to Sol.exe). It does not play for you: every cast still needs your key press (or a held key).

How it works

  • Mark: moving the mouse over a monster makes it your mark. Moving onto empty ground or the interface keeps the mark. It is dropped when the monster dies or leaves your screen, when you change maps, after 20 seconds without hovering or using it, or when you switch smartcast off.
  • Attack skills (Fire Bolt, Double Strafe...): cast at the mark, no click. With no mark nothing is cast and you do not walk anywhere (spamming a key on a dying monster is safe). Out of range you walk to it first, as with a click.
  • No targeting cursor (smartcast 5): a smartcast skill is cast the moment you press the key, also during cast time or after-cast delay. A press during a cast is kept by the game for when the cast ends (the newest press wins); a press during the after-cast delay is refused by the server, exactly as a click would be. A press during a normal attack's swing is kept by the server and cast the moment the swing ends (the newest press wins; walking or a new attack drops it); this works with or without smartcast.
  • Hold the key to repeat the skill at your keyboard's repeat rate (at most every repeat_ms); the game's own skill delays still apply.
  • Clicking a skill on the hotkey bar with the mouse works the same as its key.
  • Self skills (buffs), items, skills used from the skill window and autocast scrolls work exactly as without smartcast.
  • Ground skills that deal damage (Arrow Shower, Storm Gust, Dragon Breath, Meteor Storm...): placed at the cursor at once, or at your mark with ground_cast=mark; you walk into range first when the spot is far.
  • Ground skills without damage (Pneuma, Safety Wall, Sanctuary, Ice Wall, Warp Portal...) and traps work exactly as without smartcast: the game's own cursor, your own click (ground_skills=all places the non-damage ones at the cursor too).
  • Support skills (Heal, Blessing and other skills on a friend) work exactly as without smartcast: the game's own cursor, your own click (since smartcast 4; support_cast=cursor brings the old way back).
  • Only real monsters are marked: never an NPC that looks like a monster, and never a player's summon (a Kagerou's or Oboro's Illusion Shadow, a Mechanic's Silver Sniper or Magic Decoy, an Alchemist's plants, a homunculus' Legion, Meister and Biolo summons).
  • Summoned slaves do not steal the mark from their master or another monster.
  • Every hotkey works, including ones you rebind in the game: nothing to set up.
  • While you type in a chat or text box, or the game is not the active window, smartcast leaves your keys alone.
  • Name plates: smartcast.dll also makes the mouse-over name use the two-line layout Name (Party) / Guild [Position] for everyone, monsters included. Sol's monster plates need it (see What is different); it works even while smartcast is switched off.

Keys

  • End switches smartcast off or on while you play; a chat line says "smartcast on" or "smartcast off".
  • Optional: an effect key that steps through a list of circle effects, to pick the one you like (see below).

Settings

Your settings are in smartcast.ini in your Sol folder, next to Sol.exe. Open it with Notepad, change a line and save: smartcast picks up the change within a second, no restart needed (except enabled). Updates keep your file: they only replace smartcast.default.ini, which holds the default values and an explanation of every line. Delete your smartcast.ini to get the defaults back at the next install.

Line What it does Default
enabled 1 = on at start, 0 = off at start (End still turns it on) 1
toggle the on/off key; none for no key End
hover 1 = the monster under the cursor becomes the mark 1
targets monsters (real monsters only) or all (players, NPCs and summons too) monsters
ignore_slaves 1 = summoned slaves never take the mark from another live monster 1
cast direct = cast at once, never a cursor (smartcast 5); watch = the older smartcast 4 way, only to compare direct
ground_cast ground skills: cursor, mark (at the marked monster) or off (you click yourself). The older ground line is ignored cursor
ground_skills damage = only ground skills that deal damage; all = Pneuma, Safety Wall and the like too damage
support_cast only with cast=watch: support skills off (you click yourself) or cursor. The older support line is ignored off
repeat 1 = holding a smartcast skill key repeats the cast 1
repeat_ms shortest time in milliseconds between two casts of a held key (a single press is never held back) 150
typing_guard 1 = smartcast ignores keys while you type or the game is not in front 1
mark_ttl_ms the mark is forgotten after this many milliseconds without hovering or use (0 = never) 20000
mark_effect the circle on your mark (0 = none); the default file lists effects to try 159 (PvP circle)
mark_effect_ms 0 = show the effect once; only for short one-shot effects: replay it this often 0
mark_mvp_effect a different effect for bosses and MVPs (0 = the same) 0
mark_effect_cycle, effect_key a list of effect numbers and a key that steps through them empty, none
chat 1 = messages in the chat window, 0 = in the window title 1
report_mark 1 = tell the server which monster is marked (only for a server-side marker; not needed) 0
name_lines 1 = mouse-over names always in two lines, Name (Party) over Guild [Position], monsters too (Sol's monster plates need it); 0 = the game decides (/showname on shows no monster info) 1
debug 1 writes every cast and mark to smartcast.log, and any skill cursor the game opens outside the hotkey bar 0

If something goes wrong

  • smartcast.log in the Sol folder says which settings file was read and whether smartcast found what it needs in the client ("internals: ok", and "direct cast ok" for the cursor-free casting; "direct cast unavailable" means smartcast fell back to the older way, which still works).
  • "smartcast: client version not supported" (window title, log) means the game exe changed in a way smartcast does not know: smartcast then does nothing and the game plays normally. Tell the server admin.
  • To switch it off completely, set enabled=0 and toggle=none.
  • Do not delete smartcast.dll: the game does not start without it.
